Ashness Bridge, Stone road bridge in Borrowdale, England
Ashness Bridge is a listed stone bridge in a Lake District valley that crosses a stream and provides a connection on a narrow road. The structure has a simple arch and low stone walls on both sides.
The structure dates from the 18th century and originally served pack horse caravans transporting goods between settlements. A parapet wall was added later to strengthen the construction.
The bridge shows traditional craft methods from the region, with its stonework reflecting local building practices of the 19th century. It remains part of the walking route system that visitors use daily to explore this rural area.
The best access point is the Great Wood car park, from which marked paths lead to the stream and bridge. The short walk is easy to manage and offers several route options depending on your interests and available time.
From this spot you look directly at Derwent Water lake and Skiddaw mountain, which makes the bridge a favorite subject for photographers. This view is one reason why artists repeatedly choose the location.
