Anglo-Bavarian Brewery, Victorian brewery in Shepton Mallet, England.
The Anglo-Bavarian Brewery is a four-story limestone structure with Italianate design and twin five-story towers flanking each side. The building combines defensive stonework with elegant proportions typical of industrial architecture from that period.
The site began as the Shepton Mallet Pale Ale Brewery in 1864, then gained prominence when Bavarian brewers arrived to introduce new German methods in 1872. This transition transformed local brewing practices and established new technical standards.
The building represents a fusion of English and German brewing traditions from an era when British brewers adopted continental techniques. This influence remains visible in the architecture and the name of the place itself.
The site now functions as part of the Anglo Trading Estate, housing various local businesses throughout its spaces. Visitors can observe the exterior of this protected structure, though access to specific interior areas may be restricted depending on business operations.
During initial construction, workers uncovered ancient pottery kilns from the 1st and 2nd centuries that produced Severn Valley Ware. This discovery reveals the site's long heritage as a manufacturing center stretching back to Roman times.
