Church of St Peter and St Paul, Shepton Mallet, Medieval parish church in Shepton Mallet, England.
The Church of St Peter and St Paul is a parish church in this market town featuring a distinctive four-stage tower constructed in the early 15th century. The tower displays elaborate stonework with corner pinnacles and decorative parapets that have survived centuries of English weather.
The oldest portions of the structure date from before 1066, while the main building as we see it today took shape during the 15th century. Later centuries brought modifications and maintenance that preserved the core design while adapting the building to changing needs.
The interior displays an ornate oak barrel vault with hundreds of individually carved panels and numerous angels adorning the sides of the nave. These embellishments shape the visual character of the space and demonstrate the skilled craftsmanship of those who built it.
The building sits within walking distance of the town center and has limited parking near the entrance. Those planning a visit should check ahead about service times, as these may affect access on certain days.
The church houses a rare set of five medieval bells, ranked among the heaviest known from that era. These bells have endured for centuries and represent a remarkable engineering achievement for their time.
