Altolusso, Residential tower in Cardiff, United Kingdom.
Altolusso is a residential tower in central Cardiff, built in a Y-shaped plan across 23 floors with 292 apartments. Four elevators serve the building, which is among the tallest residential structures in the Welsh capital.
The site was home to the Cardiff Gas Light and Coke Company from 1837, and its industrial facilities operated there for well over a century before being cleared in the early 2000s. The tower was then built on the cleared land, turning a former industrial plot into a residential address in the city center.
At street level, the old New College facade from the Victorian era has been kept standing in front of the tower, and the contrast is visible to anyone walking past. The ornate stonework of the 19th century sits directly against the smooth glass and concrete of the modern building above.
The tower stands in central Cardiff, within walking distance of the main shopping streets and public transport stops. Since it is a private residential building, visitors can only see it from the street outside.
Altolusso was used as a filming location for the television series Torchwood, with scenes shot on its rooftop looking out over the Cardiff skyline. The production is one of the most widely recognised television projects ever made in Wales.
