Baker Street Mill, Historical smock mill in Orsett, England
Baker Street Mill is an octagonal brick structure with four double sails and a distinctive cap, featuring internal stone machinery arranged across multiple levels. The building has been partially converted to residential use while retaining its milling mechanisms.
Built in 1765, the mill originally relied on wind power for its grain processing operations. Steam power later supplemented traditional methods when a steam mill was established nearby.
The mill represents how grain was processed using traditional English milling methods, with the internal stone mechanisms still visible as evidence of skilled craftwork from centuries past.
Visitors should be aware that the mill functions partly as private residence, which may limit interior access to certain areas. The exterior structure and restored features are visible and can be observed from the surrounding grounds.
Inscriptions with initials from different years were discovered carved inside the mill, suggesting the work of multiple craftsmen maintaining and modifying the structure over generations. These marks offer glimpses into the hands that shaped it.
