Bakestall, Mountain summit in Lake District Northern Fells, England.
Bakestall is a mountain summit in the Lake District's Northern Fells, located roughly 7 kilometers north of Keswick. The peak stands at 673 meters elevation and features Dead Crags, a 150-meter slate wall that drops into the northern corrie below.
The slopes of this summit contain remnants of a lead mining operation, with its entrance still visible on the western side near Dead Beck. This mining activity reflects the area's past industrial use during earlier centuries.
Alfred Wainwright included Bakestall in his Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells, documenting the mountain's features and establishing its recognition among hikers.
To reach the summit, follow the track to Skiddaw House, then continue toward the Whitewater Dash waterfalls before ascending via Birkett Edge. The route involves steep sections and requires proper footwear and weather-appropriate clothing for fell conditions.
Whitewater Dash at the base of the mountain creates multiple cascades along Dash Beck and stands as one of the Lake District National Park's most notable waterfalls. This waterfall system drops directly below the northern slopes and becomes especially powerful during snowmelt.
