Arfon transmitting station, Transmitter station in Nebo, Gwynedd, Wales
Arfon transmitting station is a broadcast facility on Nebo mountain in Gwynedd, in northern Wales. The mast is held in place by steel cables and carries antennas that send television signals across a large part of north Wales.
The station was built in 1962 by the Independent Television Authority to bring ITV television to northwest Wales. From 1982 onward it also carried S4C, the Welsh language television channel.
The station expanded its programming in 1982 to include S4C broadcasts, supporting Welsh language television content across the northern region of Wales.
The mast is easily visible from the surrounding upland area, though the site itself is not accessible to the public for safety reasons. The open terrain around the location gives clear views across the landscape of north Wales.
At around 317 meters tall, the mast is the highest man-made structure in Wales, taller than any mountain in the region. In 2006, modern LED warning lights replaced the older aviation lights at the top of the structure.
