Pen-yr-Orsedd quarry

Pen-yr-Orsedd is a slate quarry in Nantlle Valley, Wales, featuring multiple excavation pits connected by narrow-gauge railway tracks at different elevation levels. The site is marked by steep rock faces and terraced levels that reflect years of continuous extraction work.

The quarry began in 1816 with basic hillside galleries and expanded significantly after 1862 under the Darbishire Company ownership. Peak production came in the 1890s before the industry faced changes.

The site was a major employer for the local community, with workers passing down specialized skills in slate extraction through families. This shaped the social and economic character of the valley for decades.

The terrain is rough and requires sturdy footwear due to uneven ground and steep slopes. Visitors should be prepared for changing weather, as the elevated location can be windy and wet.

The site features an underground drainage system that freed operators from the extensive water pumping common at other slate quarries. This innovative approach to handling water was rare for its time.
