Ballygally Castle

Ballygally Castle is a 17th century fortress built in Scottish baronial style, rising above Ballygally Bay with four corner turrets and thick defensive walls. It now operates as a hotel while maintaining its original fortified structure and architectural character.

James Shaw from Scotland built the castle in 1625 on rented land, creating a fortified residence that endured through later conflicts. The construction reflects Scottish connections and the military building traditions of that era.

The inscription above the main entrance displays text in Middle Scots, revealing the Scottish roots of the place. These words reflect the cultural influence that shaped the region's architecture and heritage.

The castle is located north of Larne and easily accessible by car, with parking available at the site. The location provides convenient access to coastal paths and nearby beaches for exploring the surrounding area.

A spiral stone staircase in the northeast tower leads to rooms where visitors report mysterious occurrences. Local stories about the place keep memories of former inhabitants alive in a living tradition.
