Black Barony, Medieval tower house in Eddleston, Scotland.

Black Barony is a stone-built house with tower elements and various later extensions added over generations. The buildings sit on expansive grounds and function today as a hotel with facilities including a restaurant and spa.

The Murray family took over the estate in the early modern period and gained significant standing in regional border society. The house underwent various architectural adjustments over subsequent centuries while maintaining its status as an important landholding.

The name refers to its origins as a seat of local lordship, and visitors can still see the commanding stone structure now used as a hotel. The rooms and grounds demonstrate how a medieval residence gradually transformed into a modern hospitality venue.

The estate sits in a rural area of the Scottish border region, about an hour's drive south of Edinburgh, and is easily accessible by main roads. Visitors should note that the grounds are larger than they first appear and comfortable shoes are recommended for exploring.

The grounds contain a large map with references to Polish history and geography, an unexpected feature that links Scottish and Eastern European cultures. This artwork surprises many visitors as it sits outside the typical frame of a Scottish country property.
