Berystede, hotel in South Ascot
Berystede is a country house hotel near Windsor in Berkshire, designed to resemble a French château with small towers and large stone fireplaces. The house has been recently renovated and combines classical style with modern comfort in its rooms.
The land belonged to the Murray family and was developed by the Standish family in the 1870s, who built the first castle-like house on the site. After a fire in 1886, the house was rebuilt and later converted into a hotel, which sheltered important refugees fleeing Europe during the Second World War.
The name Berystede comes from its past as farmland and pastures in the area. Today, the hotel reflects this rural heritage through its gardens and spacious, countryside setting.
The hotel is just a few minutes' drive from Ascot railway station and about ten minutes from Ascot Racecourse, with Heathrow airport less than half an hour's drive away. London and Windsor are both within easy reach, making it simple to combine a stay here with sightseeing trips.
The Prince of Wales, who later became King Edward VII, visited the ruins after the devastating fire of 1886 and offered his sympathy to the family. This royal connection reflects the historical importance of the place within the local community.
