Barony and Castle of Kilbirnie, Medieval tower house in Kilbirnie, Scotland
Barony and Castle of Kilbirnie is a 15th-century tower house in Scotland with thick stone walls measuring about 8 feet (2.5 meters) thick and vaulted ceilings at ground level. The structure was expanded later and consists of several connected sections that show how residential fortifications evolved over time.
The structure was built in the 15th century and significantly expanded in 1627 with new residential areas added. A devastating fire in 1757 caused by knocked-over candles inflicted severe damage on the building.
The castle shows how Scottish noble families transformed their homes over time by connecting defensive towers with later residential extensions. Visitors can still see the architectural layers that reflect this evolution.
The site is difficult to access and surrounded by debris, so visitors should exercise caution when exploring. It is best to view the structure from a distance and note the stability of the walls before getting closer.
The building still contains an underground prison pit and a preserved fireplace from earlier times. The remains of multi-corbelled turrets suggest the roof structure was originally higher and more elaborate than it appears today.
