Bruton Abbey, Medieval abbey ruins in Bruton, England
Bruton Abbey is the remains of a medieval monastery now preserved within King's School grounds in Somerset. Stone foundations, walls, and architectural fragments mark where the religious community once stood.
The site began as an Augustinian priory in 1127 and was elevated to abbey status in 1511. It was dissolved during Henry VIII's religious changes in 1539.
The medieval monastery operated as an educational center where religious texts were copied and ecclesiastical knowledge was transmitted to future generations.
The ruins are located on school grounds with some sections visible from outside, though access may be limited due to school activities. The 16th-century Dovecote nearby provides a vantage point to view the former monastic site.
After dissolution, the Berkeley family converted the site into a mansion and reused medieval stones in its construction. The mansion stood until its demolition in 1786.
