Gants Mill, Historic watermill in Pitcombe, England
Gants Mill is a watermill beside the River Brue in Somerset that still contains original grinding machinery, stones, and storage equipment from the 1800s. The building retains the structure and layout of a working mill from its period.
The current building was built in 1810, reusing parts of an older mill structure from the 1700s. Milling activities at this location started around 1290 in medieval times.
The Weston family maintained ownership of the mill for four centuries, with extensive documentation preserved in the Somerset Record Office for research purposes.
The mill sits right along the river with level access to the main building and surrounding grounds. Visiting is best from spring through autumn when weather and daylight are most favorable.
A modern turbine system installed in 2003 generates electricity from the river flow, showing how this ancient milling site now produces renewable energy. The surroundings also feature a planted garden where different flowers bloom depending on the season.
