Brent Knoll Camp, Iron Age hillfort in East Brent, England
The fortified settlement occupies an area of 1.6 hectares atop a 137-meter hill, featuring a 10-meter wall and defensive ditch.
Archaeological excavations revealed Roman coins from Emperors Trajan and Severus, indicating continuous occupation from the Bronze Age through the Roman period.
Prior to Somerset Levels drainage, this elevated settlement served as the Isle of Frogs, providing protection from surrounding waters for early inhabitants.
The National Trust maintains this scheduled monument, which stands near major transport routes including the M5 motorway and Bristol-Taunton railway line.
The archaeological evaluation uncovered a black, charcoal-rich layer at 1.5 meters depth, with Romano-British pottery fragments in higher soil horizons.
