Brent Knoll Camp, Iron Age hillfort in East Brent, England
Brent Knoll Camp is a fortified Iron Age settlement perched atop a high hill near East Brent, surrounded by defensive walls and ditches. The site spans multiple hectares and shows the typical layout of a hilltop settlement built for protection and control.
The settlement was occupied from the Bronze Age through the Roman period, as shown by archaeological finds including Roman coins. Continuous traces of human activity reveal the site's importance across many centuries.
The elevated location once earned this place the name Isle of Frogs, as it served as a refuge for early residents surrounded by wetlands. This high ground was a vital shelter in an otherwise water-logged landscape.
The site is readily accessible and located near major transport routes, making it easy to combine a visit with other local activities. The grounds are open to visitors and managed as a protected monument.
Excavations revealed a dark charcoal-rich layer that hints at ancient burning or fires. Higher soil levels contained Romano-British pottery fragments that document different phases of human use.
