Burscough Priory
Burscough Priory, Augustinian monastery ruins in West Lancashire, England.
Burscough Priory was a medieval religious complex featuring structures from the 13th century, with two stone piers and a tombstone remaining today. The ruins show what once was a larger and more elaborate site.
The priory was founded in 1190 by Robert Fitz-Henry and received a Royal Charter from Edward I in 1286 to establish a weekly market in Ormskirk. This honor reflected its growing importance in the region.
The priory served as a center for religious learning and provided medical care, including a hospital that treated people with leprosy. This made it an important place for the surrounding community.
The ruins are located in West Lancashire and are designated as a Grade I listed building and scheduled monument. This means the site is specially protected and kept accessible for visitors.
Archaeological surveys using ground-penetrating radar revealed hidden foundations of a cross-shaped building with monastic quarters beneath the surface. These discoveries show the complex was once much larger than the visible remains suggest.
