Broughton Hall, Gothic Revival mansion in West Derby, Liverpool, England
Broughton Hall is a Gothic Revival mansion in West Derby featuring pointed arches and detailed stonework that define its exterior. A conservatory from the 1870s extends from the main structure and adds to its architectural character.
The mansion was built starting in 1860 for Gustav Christian Schwabe, a Hamburg merchant who established a business in Liverpool. It was created during the Victorian era when wealthy traders invested in grand homes to show their status.
The Sisters of Mercy bought the building in 1925 and turned it into a school that still serves the community as a Catholic educational institution today.
The building was listed as Grade II* in 1975 and receives strict protection to preserve its original features. Visitors should note that the site functions as a school building and may not always be accessible to the public.
The conservatory was added between 1870 and 1880 and is a rare surviving example of 19th century glasshouse architecture. This addition was built when such botanical spaces became fashionable features in wealthy households.
