St John the Evangelist, Knotty Ash, Gothic Anglican church in Knotty Ash, Liverpool, England.
St John the Evangelist is an Anglican church built from red sandstone with a narrow west tower topped by a recessed spire. The side walls feature tall three-light perpendicular windows separated by thin buttresses typical of Gothic design.
Construction of the church began in 1834 under architects Williams and Edwards, though Richard and Paul Barker of Huyton took over and finished the work by 1836. The building rose from local planning and regional craftsmanship of that era.
The carved panels in the choir stalls were made by women from the local community working under Miss Thompson's direction. Their handiwork reflects how residents took part in decorating the church.
The church is open for services held regularly on Sundays throughout the year. Planning your visit around service times ensures you can access the interior and experience the space as intended.
The churchyard holds the grave of Norman Harrison, who served as Second Engineer aboard the Titanic. This connection to a famous maritime tragedy adds an unexpected layer of history to the burial ground.
