Caersws Roman Forts, Roman military forts in Caersws, Wales.
Caersws Roman Forts are two separate military installations positioned along the River Severn, with defensive earthworks and stone structures from different building phases. They show how the Romans adapted their construction methods over time in this river valley location.
The first installation was built between 43 and 84 CE during Rome's military campaigns in Britain. A second permanent fort was later established where the Carno and Severn rivers meet.
The forts brought together soldiers and local people, with traders and craftspeople settling near the military grounds. This coexistence shaped the character of the valley in ways that remain visible today.
The remains are mostly visible as earthworks in open ground, with the best-preserved sections north of Caersws railway station along the A470 road. You can walk around freely and view the defensive ditches and stone footings from different angles.
The site features three parallel defensive ditches running side by side, showing how the Romans layered their protection strategies in this location. Around 200 CE, the headquarters and walls were rebuilt entirely in stone, marking a major shift in how the fort was constructed.
