Cainhoe Castle, Medieval archaeological site in Clophill, England
The remains of Cainhoe Castle include a circular mound rising 8 meters high with three outer enclosures protected by deep defensive ditches.
Built after the Norman Conquest by Nigel d'Aubigny, the castle served as the seat of the Barony of Cainhoe until its abandonment during the Black Death in 1348.
The site represents the Norman practice of establishing control through strategic fortifications, with the motte-and-bailey design reflecting military architecture of the period.
Visitors can access the castle grounds from Clophill High Street opposite Town Shott through a designated field path near the A507 road.
The castle grounds contain medieval fish ponds and evidence of a later manor house platform, indicating changes in the site's function over centuries.
