Cargo Studios, Recording studio in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, England
Cargo Studios was a recording facility in Rochdale equipped with 16-track recording capability and specialized equipment for capturing raw sound. The studio operated from 1977 until 1984, providing space for independent bands to produce their work.
John Brierley founded the studio in 1977 and established it as a center for post-punk music production before it closed in 1984. During this seven-year span, much of the experimental British music that defined the decade was created here.
The studio served as a gathering place for post-punk bands from the region and shaped the sound of a generation of musicians. Artists who worked here developed their distinctive style within these walls and helped put Rochdale on the map of British music.
The studio was located on Kenion Street and received a blue commemorative plaque in 2009 honoring its contribution to music history. Visitors can identify the location by this historical marker and view the building from the street.
Joy Division recorded their song 'Atmosphere' here, a track that became a cornerstone of the post-punk movement. The recording shows how innovative artists used the studio's accessibility to create enduring work.
