The original L-shaped building was transformed between 1683 and 1696 by Sir George Mackenzie into a large quadrangular mansion. William Adam added extensions between 1740 and 1741 that enhanced its architectural character.
The mansion served as residence for notable figures including Henry Cockburn and composer Alicia Scott, who wrote the melody for Annie Laurie.
The property is privately owned and functions as a residence today, with its original architectural features carefully maintained. Extensive restoration work over recent decades has returned the building to its former condition.
