Cassel Hospital

Cassel Hospital is a psychiatric facility in Richmond housed in a Grade II listed structure dating to the 18th century. The campus includes the original mansion and several treatment areas spread throughout the grounds to accommodate different therapeutic programs.

The institution was founded in 1919 to treat soldiers suffering from war-related psychological trauma and began at different locations before relocating to Richmond in 1948. This move marked the start of a new chapter focused on developing fresh approaches to psychiatric care.

The site became known in the 1940s for pioneering approaches that brought patients and staff together in shared living spaces for healing. Visitors can still observe how this philosophy of community and participation shaped the layout and use of the grounds today.

The site sits in a well-connected residential area with easy access to London transport links. Note that this is an active medical facility, so public access may be limited to certain areas or require advance arrangements.

The building was once the residence of a French duke and served as a school and hotel before becoming a treatment center. This rich architectural past gives the place an air of former grandeur that remains visible in its classical design today.
