Champion Hill, football stadium in East Dulwich
Champion Hill is a football ground in East Dulwich, south London, and is home to Dulwich Hamlet Football Club. It has a covered stand on the north side, open standing areas behind both goals, and room for roughly 3,000 spectators in total.
The ground opened in 1912, making it one of the oldest football venues in London. During the 1948 London Olympics, it hosted a football match between Mexico and South Korea, one of the few non-professional grounds used during the Games.
The standing areas behind the goals give Champion Hill a feel that many larger grounds have lost over the years. Supporters tend to gather close to the pitch, which makes the crowd noise and the sense of involvement noticeably stronger than in a seated venue.
East Dulwich and Denmark Hill train stations are both within roughly a 10-minute walk, and several bus routes stop nearby. It is worth arriving a little early on match days, as the entrances can get busy just before kick-off, especially on Saturday afternoons.
In 2018, Dulwich Hamlet was forced to leave Champion Hill and play its matches at another ground for several months. The response from the local community was strong enough to bring the club back to this same ground before the year ended.
