The church's foundation stone was laid in August 1837, with Phoebe Silcock of Whiteley Wood Hall providing land and funds for its construction.
The congregation maintains traditional Anglican practices through weekly services, Bible studies, youth activities, and community support programs for various age groups.
The building received substantial expansions in 1953 with a south aisle addition and in 1981 with the construction of a north aisle and gallery.
The parish originally covered 19 square miles, extending to Stanage Edge and Ringinglow, making it the largest in Sheffield at its creation in 1839.
