Moor Park, Grade II* listed park in Preston, England
Moor Park is the oldest and largest park in Preston, spanning over 100 acres of landscaped grounds with distinctive lime tree-lined avenues, a winding lake, and features designed in the Victorian era. The layout combines open grasslands, walking paths, and planted areas that reflect 19th-century garden design principles.
The site witnessed combat during the Second English Civil War in 1648 when Oliver Cromwell's forces clashed with Royalist and Scottish troops in the area. It was subsequently transformed into a landscaped public park and enhanced with Victorian design elements that define its character today.
The Jeremiah Horrocks Observatory, established in 1927 during a solar eclipse, continues to serve the University of Central Lancashire for educational events.
Amenities include two children's play areas, sports facilities, public restrooms, parking spaces, and clear signage throughout the grounds. The well-marked pathways and signposts help visitors navigate different sections and find facilities easily.
The Jeremiah Horrocks Observatory was built on the grounds in 1927 and remains an active facility for educational programs and research conducted by the University of Central Lancashire. The location was selected for this astronomical facility to support observations conducted by students and researchers.
