Christ Church, Over Wyresdale, Grade II listed Anglican church in Over Wyresdale, England
Christ Church in Over Wyresdale is a stone church with a west tower topped by a slated spire and diagonal buttresses supporting its walls. Gothic details appear throughout the building, including pointed windows decorated with tracery patterns typical of the style.
The church was built in 1733, replacing an earlier chapel from the 15th century. Architect John Douglas carried out major changes in 1894 that shaped much of its current appearance.
The church contains architectural elements from different periods, including carved pews from 1894 and ornate pulpit panels dating back to 1684.
The church is located west of Abbeystead village and remains an active parish church. Check ahead about service times, as these can affect when you might visit comfortably.
The east window features five ogee-shaped lights arranged beneath a Tudor-arched crown, a distinctive design detail. This window arrangement differs notably from the other Gothic windows found elsewhere in the building.
