Cementation furnace, Sheffield
Cementation furnace, Sheffield, Industrial furnace in Sheffield, England
The cementation furnace features a tall conical tower structure built with brick and reinforced with wrought iron bands on Doncaster Street.
Built in 1848 for Daniel Doncasters and Sons, this furnace operated continuously until 1952, producing blister steel for the manufacturing industry.
The structure represents Sheffield's industrial manufacturing heritage as the last complete cementation furnace remaining in Great Britain.
Visitors can obtain access keys from the Kelham Island Museum to enter the gated area surrounding the Grade II listed monument.
During World War II, the furnace received a protective blackout cover for the outlet, which remains visible today painted in white.
