Cementation furnace, Sheffield

The cementation furnace is a tall conical brick structure reinforced with wrought iron bands located on Doncaster Street. It displays the distinctive design used for producing high-quality steel through heating and processing.

The furnace was built in 1848 for Daniel Doncasters and Sons and became a center of steel production. It operated continuously until 1952, shaping the local economy for over a century.

The furnace represents Sheffield's steel-making past as the last complete structure of its kind remaining in the country. Visitors walking around it can sense the importance this place held for local industry.
