Church Island, River island in Menai Strait, Great Britain.
Church Island is a river island in the Menai Strait connected to Anglesey by a tidal causeway. It features St Tysilio's Church and a grade-II listed war memorial situated within the churchyard grounds.
Saint Tysilio founded a hermitage on the island around 630 AD before moving to Meifod to become an abbot. The church built later on the site continues his religious presence there.
The churchyard holds graves of important Welsh figures, including the poet Cynan and historian John Edward Lloyd. These burials reflect the place's connection to Welsh-language artists and scholars.
Access to the island is through a woodland path from the A545 road car park, continuing along the Anglesey Coastal Path to the causeway. Visitors should check tidal conditions before crossing, as the causeway becomes submerged at high tide.
The surrounding waters of the Menai Strait, known as the Swellies, are famous for strong tidal currents that challenge maritime navigation. These turbulent conditions make the waters a striking hydrographic feature of the region.
