Church of Scotland Offices, Church headquarters in New Town, Edinburgh, Scotland
The Church of Scotland Offices occupy a building at 121 George Street that was completed in the early 1900s. The structure features Scandinavian architectural details, includes a chapel near the entrance, a basement canteen, and a bookshop added during a 1930s expansion.
Construction took place from 1909 to 1911 under architect Sydney Mitchell's design for the United Free Church of Scotland. Following the 1929 church union, the Church of Scotland assumed control and has occupied it as their administrative center ever since.
The building served as the headquarters where the Church of Scotland makes decisions about its direction and leadership. Inside, you can observe how administrative and spiritual functions share the same space.
The building sits on a main street in the city center and is easily accessible by foot. The chapel is located near the entrance for those wishing to visit, and the bookshop can be found on the building's eastern side.
An expansion planned for the west side of the building never came to fruition, even though the east side was successfully extended in the 1930s. This unrealized plan left the building with an unbalanced appearance that remains visible today.
