Clegg Hall

Clegg Hall is a stone country house in Littleborough with multiple outbuildings including barns, stables, gardens, and fishponds reflecting 17th-century architectural style. The entire complex demonstrates how substantial rural estates were organized and constructed during that period.

Theophilus Ashton commissioned the house in 1610 on land the Clegg family had occupied since medieval times. This construction built upon foundations of earlier structures, establishing the property as a significant regional residence.

The name preserves the legacy of the Clegg family, whose presence shaped this corner of Lancashire for centuries. Walking around the grounds, you can sense how important agricultural estates were to local life and community identity.

The estate is organized around a main house with various outbuildings that visitors can explore. It helps to wear suitable footwear, as pathways on the grounds can be uneven and access to different areas may depend on weather conditions.

Between 1818 and 1869, the house served as a public house called Horse and Hounds, functioning as a gathering place for the community. A fire in the 1950s caused substantial damage, shaping the building's story and requiring significant restoration efforts afterward.
