Church of St John the Evangelist, Edinburgh, Episcopal church on Princes Street in Edinburgh, Scotland
The Church of St John the Evangelist is an Episcopal church on Princes Street featuring a plaster vault ceiling inspired by Henry VII Chapel in Westminster Abbey. Stained glass windows by Ballantine brighten the interior with color and light.
Construction started in 1816 under architect William Burn, and the church was dedicated in 1818. This early period shaped how Edinburgh's religious spaces developed during the 1800s.
The church serves as a gathering place where both worshippers and visitors find a sense of belonging within the city's spiritual life. Its position on a main street makes it accessible to those passing through, drawing in people from different backgrounds.
The church sits on Princes Street, one of the city's main thoroughfares, making it easy to reach on foot. Services happen regularly, and the building also hosts cultural events throughout the year.
In 2017 this building hosted a wedding ceremony that became a turning point for inclusive faith practice across Britain. The event made the church a symbol of changing values within the Anglican tradition.
