Church of St Lawrence, Rode, Medieval church in Rode, England
The Church of St Lawrence is a church building in Rode featuring late medieval architecture with a prominent tower containing six bells. The structure shows carved gargoyles, stone heads on windows, and ornate details throughout.
Construction began in the late 14th century, though fragments of a Norman doorway suggest an even earlier religious site at this location. The spiritual significance of the place thus extends beyond the medieval period.
The building plays host to the Clipping ceremony, where locals and visitors form a circle around it while singing and dancing. This tradition takes place around Easter or Shrove Tuesday and connects the community to the place.
When visiting, you can explore the interior and tower structure where the bells and their frame are visible. The surroundings of the building make it easy to examine architectural details from different angles.
During the bell restoration between 2003 and 2006, the original wooden frame was replaced with a modern steel frame. This swap represented a significant technical change within the tower while its outward appearance remained unchanged.
