Cochrane Theatre, Theatre venue in Southampton Row, Camden, England.
The Cochrane Theatre is a theatre building on Southampton Row in the London Borough of Camden. It has a proscenium stage, an orchestra pit, and a single-level auditorium with over 300 seats and more than 40 counterweight flying bars above the stage.
The building was constructed in 1963 by the London County Council and named after Jeannetta Cochrane, known for her work in costume and stage design. Her name was chosen to honor her lasting influence on training in those fields.
The Cochrane Theatre sits on Southampton Row and was long connected to the Central School of Art & Design. Students from the theatre design course used it as a space to show their work in front of a real audience.
The theatre is on Southampton Row and easy to reach on foot from Holborn tube station. The compact size of the auditorium means that sightlines are good from almost every seat.
The Cochrane Theatre was used on several occasions for television recordings by broadcasters including Channel 4 and ITV. The stage and orchestra pit made it practical for this purpose, as the small auditorium helped with sound control.
