Cumberland House, Mansion in Pall Mall, City of Westminster, United Kingdom.
Cumberland House was a mansion on Pall Mall with seven bays distributed across three main stories, plus a basement and attics above. The building was constructed from brick with stone detailing enriching its front elevation.
Matthew Brettingham designed this building in the 1760s for Prince Edward, Duke of York and Albany, initially called York House. After 1806 the Board of Ordnance acquired the property and later used it as War Office headquarters.
Robert Adam designed multiple interior schemes for the residence during the Duke of Cumberland's ownership, though most of these plans were never fully realized.
Visitors should know that the original building was demolished between 1908 and 1911 and no longer stands. The Royal Automobile Club now occupies the same site on Pall Mall.
Robert Adam created several interior design schemes for the house when it belonged to the Duke of Cumberland, but few were actually built before his death. His creative plans therefore remained largely unrealized and survive only in historical records.
