Collairnie Castle, Medieval castle in Fife, Scotland

The L-shaped stone structure features thick defensive walls, narrow windows, and a four-story wing with an attic added during the 16th century extension.

The castle belonged to the Barclay family until 1789, when ownership transferred to the Balfours following several centuries of continuous residence.

Two painted ceilings within the remaining structure provide evidence of the decorative traditions practiced by Scottish nobility during medieval times.

The castle stands as part of a 19th-century farm complex, with its main block reduced to a single story and the tower incorporated into agricultural buildings.

Mary Queen of Scots stayed at Collairnie Castle for three nights in January 1565 during her journey to St Andrews.
