Drill Hall

The Drill Hall at 36 Dalmeny Street is a spacious stone building containing studio rooms, gallery spaces, and performance stages. It also features a licensed café serving visitors throughout the day.

The building was constructed in 1901 as a headquarters for the 5th Volunteer Battalion Royal Scots and saw troops prepare for deployment in World War I. It became an important military site in Leith during the early 1900s.

The building regularly hosts art exhibitions, live performances, and workshops that draw from the local creative community. It functions as a gathering space where visitors can encounter contemporary art and meet artists working across different disciplines.

The building is roughly 15 minutes on foot from Waverley Station and easily accessible by public transport. Visitors should note that events and opening hours vary throughout the year, so checking ahead is recommended.

In 1915, the space served as a temporary memorial site for soldiers of the 7th Leith Battalion following the Gretna railway disaster. This episode connects the building to a tragic moment in the town's past.
