Dawsholm Park, Nature reserve near Kelvindale, Glasgow, United Kingdom.
Dawsholm Park is a nature reserve near Kelvindale in Glasgow that covers about 33 hectares of woodland and meadows. Natural pathways follow the River Kelvin through the grounds, with the main entrance near the recycling center and additional access points around the perimeter.
The council purchased the land in 1922 from Sir Archibald Campbell of Succoth and converted it into a public park that included the existing Belvidere plantation. This transformation of private estate into a public space marked an important shift in how the city developed green areas.
Visitors can watch Highland cattle grazing in managed areas, which helps shape the meadows and grasslands throughout the park. This working landscape approach makes the relationship between animals and the land visible to anyone who walks through.
The park has multiple entrances with free parking available near the main access point, making it easy to arrive by car or public transport. Walking trails are well-marked and accessible throughout the grounds, with routes of varying lengths for different needs.
Parts of the park were built on former oil shale waste sites that were later converted into meadows and sports fields. This reclamation demonstrates how industrial land can be transformed back into working green space.
