Duke of Northumberland's River, Artificial waterway system in West London, England
The Duke of Northumberland's River consists of two separate sections that channel water from the River Colne through London's western districts to the River Thames.
Construction of the western section began in 1530 during Henry VIII's reign, when 42 laborers were recorded working on cutting a new river from Longford.
The river system reflects the engineering capabilities of Tudor England, demonstrating how water management shaped the development of London's western territories.
The waterway maintains its function today through a network of sluices and channels that regulate water flow between the Colne, Crane, and Thames rivers.
The eastern section supplies water to the ornamental ponds in Syon Park, connecting to a sluice underneath Mill Plat that feeds the main lake.
