Energy World

Energy World is a residential development in Shenley Lodge containing 51 houses built with specific energy-saving features and innovative designs from different countries. Each building was engineered to perform significantly better in energy consumption than standard construction required by building regulations.

In 1986, a public exhibition of these energy-efficient houses was organized by the Milton Keynes Development Corporation and gained attention internationally. The project marked a turning point in demonstrating new approaches to sustainable construction in Britain.

The houses show architectural styles from different countries, each bringing its own approach to energy-conscious design that visitors can observe in the details. Walking through the area, you notice how these international influences shape the overall appearance of the neighborhood.

The area is best explored on foot to view the different house designs and architectural details up close from the street. It is helpful to visit during daylight hours when natural light highlights the various building facades clearly.

The project created the Milton Keynes Energy Cost Index, a concept that later became the foundation for Britain's first national energy efficiency rating system. This early measurement method shaped how energy performance in buildings is assessed today.
