Ellesmere College, school in Shropshire, UK
Ellesmere College is an independent boarding school in rural Shropshire that accepts day and residential students aged 7 to 18. The 160-acre campus features open green spaces, sports fields, and buildings arranged across a calm, expansive layout.
The school was founded in 1879 and opened in 1884 under Canon Nathaniel Woodard. Lord Brownlow donated the land, and his wife laid the first building stone, with the original name of St. Oswald's School later changing to its current name.
The school's name comes from the town of Ellesmere where it is located. With about a third of students from other countries, the campus reflects a genuine mix of cultures in daily interactions, shared meals, and social spaces.
Over 40 percent of students live on campus in various types of accommodation, meaning meals and activities are available on site for residential pupils. The campus is large and spacious, so visitors should allow time to explore and navigate the different areas.
It was the first independent school in the UK to earn a Platinum Artsmark award from the Arts Council, an honor shared by very few schools worldwide. This recognition reflects the school's deep commitment to creative subjects including dance, drama, music, painting, sculpture, and modern media like film and sound.
