Fens Pools, Nature reserve and lakes in Pensnett, United Kingdom.
Fens Pools consists of three connected lakes that spread across a large area, forming the biggest water expanse in Dudley Metropolitan Borough. The lakes are surrounded by different habitats including wetlands and reed beds, which together create a system that supports both water and land animals.
These lakes were built in 1779 by the Stourbridge Canal Company to supply water for the canal system connecting Stourbridge and Dudley. This artificial creation was designed to support transport and trade in the region.
The site draws birdwatchers and nature lovers who come to observe waterfowl such as shovellers, gadwalls, and red-necked grebes in their habitat. It functions as a local gathering place for people interested in watching and understanding the wildlife that makes its home here.
Two car parks provide access for visitors: one on Chapel Street in Pensnett and another at the junction of Pensnett Road and Blewitt Street. From either location, visitors can walk into the area and explore the sites at their own pace.
The area holds the largest population of great crested newts in the West Midlands, making it particularly valuable for studying these protected amphibians. In addition, ten dragonfly species and twenty butterfly species live here, creating a rich ecosystem that few visitors realize.
