Ferrybridge power stations, Coal-fired power stations in West Yorkshire, England

Ferrybridge power stations comprised three separate facilities built along the River Aire, featuring eight cooling towers each rising approximately 115 meters high. These plants provided electricity to the region and served as major industrial landmarks in the Yorkshire landscape.

The first plant began operating in 1927, with additional facilities constructed during the 1950s and in 1966. Operations continued until the final closure in 2016, ending nearly a century of power generation at this location.

The power stations represented industrial development in Yorkshire, employing generations of local workers and supporting regional energy infrastructure development.

The best views are available from the A1 motorway, where clear sightlines allow observation of the remaining structures. Access to the site itself is restricted, so viewing from public vantage points nearby is the practical option.

In 1965, three cooling towers collapsed simultaneously during a storm, prompting revolutionary changes to industrial cooling tower design worldwide. This dramatic incident transformed engineering practices and led to stricter safety standards for similar structures.
