Gainsborough Old Hall, Medieval manor house in Gainsborough, England.
Gainsborough Old Hall is a medieval manor house in Gainsborough built with ornate timber framing and a distinctive striped exterior from the late 1400s. It contains one of England's most complete medieval kitchens with multiple fireplaces and original bread ovens that remain largely unchanged.
Sir Thomas Burgh constructed this manor house between 1471 and 1484, establishing it as an important location for royal visits. King Richard III and King Henry VIII with his fifth wife Catherine Howard were among the prominent guests who stayed there.
The Hickman family, who took over the property in 1596, provided a gathering space for the Separatist movement before they departed to the Netherlands. Visitors can still see the rooms where this religious community assembled.
Access involves multiple levels and stairs throughout the building, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended for your visit. It is best to allow plenty of time for exploration since there is much to discover, particularly in the kitchen areas.
The woodwork throughout the building bears carved protective marks that medieval residents placed to ward off evil spirits. These hidden markings remain visible today and offer insight into the beliefs and worries of people from that era.
