St Martin's Church, Bole

St Martin's Church, Bole, grade II listed church in the United kingdom

St Martin's Church in Bole is a stone church building with a simple design and a small bell tower that rises above the structure. The interior contains wooden pews, modest stained glass windows that filter soft light, and walls showing signs of age with weathered stonework that reflects centuries of use and care.

The church was first built in the 13th century and has served the community for worship and gathering since then. In 1866, architect Ewan Christian undertook significant restoration work to strengthen the building and improve its interior, helping it survive to the present day while keeping its original simple character.

St Martin's Church is named after Martin of Tours, a saint known for his generosity and compassion. The church continues to serve the village as a gathering place for weekly services and community celebrations, where residents come together to mark life's important moments and maintain local traditions.

The church is located in the heart of the village and is easy to reach on foot, with paths and lanes leading to the building. Parking is limited in the area, so walking is often the best way to visit and experience the quiet surroundings.

The church houses three very old bells dating from around 1500 and 1600, but they cannot be rung because the fittings are in poor condition. Historical photographs from World War II also show evidence of an old clock face that once decorated the tower, adding a sense of mystery to the building's past.
