The Department of Agriculture acquired the former Gosford Demesne in 1958, leading to its designation as Northern Ireland's first conservation forest in 1986.
The park hosted the Irish Scout Jamboree in 1989, gathering over 3,000 scouts from multiple countries including Canada, Japan, and the United States.
The park maintains extensive facilities including caravan sites, camping areas, barbecue spots, picnic zones, and a network of marked trails for walking and horse riding.
The park houses one of Northern Ireland's largest collections of rare animal breeds and features a castle that served as a filming location for Game of Thrones.
