Gosford Castle, Norman castle in Markethill, Northern Ireland.
Gosford Castle is a substantial fortress in Markethill, Northern Ireland, featuring nearly 200 rooms and multiple towers with thick stone walls built in the neo-Norman style. The structure underwent renovation to create residential units while keeping its historical architectural character intact.
The Acheson family received the land in 1610 from King James VI, with construction of the current fortress beginning in 1819 under architect Thomas Hopper. This span from early modern times to the Regency period shows how the property evolved over centuries.
The castle served as a filming location for the television series Game of Thrones, with scenes shot here for House Tully's storylines. This connection to modern television has introduced the site to audiences worldwide.
The property is partly occupied as residential units today, which may limit visitor access to certain areas. It's wise to check local information and plan ahead before visiting.
During World War II, the grounds served as both a military garrison and a prisoner of war camp. This dual use reveals how militarily important the site was during that conflict.
