HM Prison Albany, Category B men's prison on the Isle of Wight
HM Prison Albany is a high security facility for adult men located on the Isle of Wight near Newport and Carisbrooke. The institution spans across wings with single cells, common areas for recreation and communication, a healthcare center, and dedicated induction areas for newly arrived prisoners.
The facility opened in 1967 on the grounds of a former military base called Albany Barracks, initially designed as a training prison. Major unrest began in the early 1970s and lasted over a year, leading to significant changes in operations and security procedures that shaped the institution for decades to come.
Visitors must pre-book visits at least one day in advance and present valid identification upon arrival. Reaching the Isle of Wight requires a ferry from ports like Portsmouth, Southampton, or Lymington, and travel to the prison is available by bus or taxi with parking facilities provided for visitors.
In 2010, two men dressed as the cartoon character Snoopy attempted to infiltrate the facility with a water gun to free a prisoner, but staff stopped the attempt before it progressed. This remains one of the most unusual incidents in British prison history.
