Sts Thomas Minster

Sts Thomas Minster, Medieval church in Newport, England

Sts Thomas Minster is a stone church that rises from St Thomas Square with a sturdy square tower as its focal point. The walls are punctuated by long rectangular windows, and the tower houses twelve bells.

The building was reconstructed in 1854 with Prince Albert's involvement, replacing an earlier structure from the 12th century. This rebuilding marked an important moment in Newport's architectural development.

The Corporation pews inside show where town officials gathered according to royal decree. This seating arrangement reflects how important the building was to Newport's civic life.

The building is open to visitors through regular services including Holy Communion and special seasonal celebrations. Plan your visit to coincide with these events throughout the year for the best experience.

Inside the church lies the tomb of Princess Elizabeth, daughter of King Charles I, who died in 1650 at age fifteen. Her burial marks a poignant connection to royal history within this local building.
