HM Prison Bronzefield, Women's correctional facility in Ashford, England
HM Prison Bronzefield is a correctional facility for women in Ashford, southwest of London, with four housing blocks that each accommodate 130 inmates. Every room includes a telephone so residents can stay connected with their families.
The facility opened in 2004 on the grounds of the former West London District School, which served orphaned children from 1872 until 1955. The site thus shifted its purpose from education to corrections.
The facility introduced the first Women's Institute branch in a British correctional setting, bringing together inmates and staff during regular meetings. This organization follows British club tradition and offers activities that structure daily routines while building social skills.
Visitors must follow security procedures before entering the grounds. Relatives can send up to 50 pounds to support personal needs of inmates.
A specialized Mother and Baby Unit allows 12 women to keep their children with them until the age of 18 months. This arrangement aims to maintain early childhood bonding even during incarceration.
